Turbo Four Reportedly to Join V-6 Options under 2018 Jeep Wrangler’s Hood

The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler will offer both a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and a diesel-sipping turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 alongside its tried-and-true 3.6-liter V-6 engine when the all-new SUV goes on sale later this year. Confirmation comes courtesy of JLWranglerForums.com, a Wrangler enthusiast forum that reported it nabbed the information from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ internal dealership system.

Along with powertrain details, FCA’s dealer system information reveals a host of other noteworthy news nuggets, including that the Sahara trim will be available only on the four-door Wrangler Unlimited and will offer a new full-time all-wheel-drive system. Sport and Rubicon trim levels will be offered on both two- and four-door Wrangler models; both trims presumably come with Jeep’s standard part-time four-wheel-drive system.

Manual-transmission lovers will be pleased to know that the six-speed stick survives, although we don’t know yet with which engine or engines it will pair. Self-shifting Wranglers will trade up from today’s five-speed automatic to one of two eight-speed units: one built by FCA, the other sourced from ZF. We’d wager that the former unit will serve in gasoline-powered models and the latter will be exclusive to the diesel.

As on the current Wrangler, the new SUV will be available with a canvas roof and a removable hardtop. Notably, the next-generation Wrangler is poised to introduce a power-softtop option. Nearly a dozen option packages will be offered as well. While details of what each package includes are currently unavailable, we’re pretty certain we can guess the basic equipment that makes up packages such as the LED Lighting package, the Dual Top group, and the Smoker’s group.

We expect to learn more about the new Wrangler as we get closer to its official debut. Jeep has yet to formally announce a reveal date, but rumors suggest the Wrangler will make its debut at the Los Angeles auto show in December with sales set to begin shortly thereafter.
