25 Favorites from the 2017 Concours d’Elegance of America

Whatever your automotive tastes, it seemed the 2017 Concours -d’Elegance of America had you covered. Fond of early 1960s Big Three -compacts? There was a circle of these “Jet -Age Juniors” just for you. Race cars from the original Can-Am?-Ditto. Got a thing for drag-racing Funny Cars from the early years, before the flip-top bodies? Oh, man. Or perhaps you -agree with the organizers that -Fiat Chrysler’s design chief Ralph Gilles is the -auto enthusiast nonpareil, that it’s time we celebrated the coachwork of -Murphy of Pasadena, or that Arturo and Deborah Keller’s collection of -five streamlined coupes -is the bee’s knees. There were cars that can hit 60 mph in -less than 3.0 seconds and stately luxury machines that probably haven’t touched that speed this century.-In its 39th year, the gathering formerly known as the Meadow Brook Concours (after its original venue) spread all this and more across several holes of the golf -course behind the Inn at St. John’s, a resort property converted from a former seminary in Plymouth, Michigan—and the site of a -Car and Driver–sponsored Cars and Coffee event-the day before. As is its tradition, the concours’ judges chose both a -domestic and a foreign Best in Show, this year -opting for a 1931 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria and a 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A. You’ll note that this means the show has yet to break with -another tradition—-the notion that the “best” cars were built before World -War II. -But every automotive taste seems to find its expression somewhere on the field. Here, then, are 25 cars from the hundreds on display that made us stop -and stare long enough to think, “I need a picture of that one.”1953 Chevrolet Corvette Chassis #003 Cutaway1953 Ferrari 250 Europa by Vignale1956 Austin-Healey 100M RoadsterAluminum-bodied 1963 Shelby Cobra1957 Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Zagato1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale1959 DKW Monza Coupe1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Alpine Tourer1916 Crane-Simplex Model 51925 Renault Model 45 Tourer1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Coupe by Viotti1937 Duesenberg Model J Airflow Coupe by Bohman & Schwartz1937 Talbot-Lago T150C Aero Coupe by Pourtout1938 Bentley 4¼-Litre Embiricos Coupe by Pourtout1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Autobahn-Kurier by Sindelfingen1960 Valiant1963 Rambler American 330 Wagon1968 McLaren M8A1973 Porsche 917/301966 Chevrolet Chevelle “Chevamoco”1981 Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo1976 Honda Civic Lady Prototype by Coggiola2009 Mercedes-McLaren SLR Stirling MossBest of Show, Foreign: 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A by Ramseier & WorblaufenBest of Show, American: 1931 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria
